2011 2 Coin Mint Set - Australian Wool

2011 2 Coin Mint Set - Australian Wool

From the earliest days of the colonies, wool production played a key role in the economic life of Australia. The popular phrase 'riding on the sheep's back' emphasised the reliance of the Australian economy on the success of the industry.

The first commercial export of wool occurred in 1811. Wool production rapidly expanded for the next 100 years to become one of Australia's oldest and most successful industries. This was due, in part, to the efforts of the 'father of the Merino industry', Captain John Macarthur (1766-1834). Wool was Australia's major source of export income in almost every year until the 1970's.

The reverse design of the dollar coin features a shearer hard at work against a textured background representing a fleece. The 20c design depicts a wagon wheel with illustrations between the spokes representing Australia's rich history of wool production.
